  • Leatherbacks can dive deeper than (3/4 mile), slightly more than the deepest known dive of a sperm whale

  • Only females ever leave the sea

  • Only sea turtle which lacks a hard shell

  • Leatherbacks can consume twice their own body weight in prey per day, feeding exclusively on soft-bodied invertebrates like jellyfish and tunicates.

  • Leatherbacks have the widest distribution of all sea turtle species.

  • They have downward curving spines (also known as papillae) in their mouth and throat which help them to capture and swallow their prey.

  • due to its unique “leather back”, lack of shell and enormous size, cannot be confused with any other kind of turtle.
